CTT Team 9 Final Photos

As I have already shared, CTT’s visit is the grand finale of the year here at SMK. It is anticipated prior, cherished during, and then anticipated again after for the following year. Change The Truth Team 9 once again blanketed SMK with loving affections, supportive words and advices, compassionate actions, new & worldly experiences outside the protected comforted of SMK’s gates, FUN and laughter, and renewed hopefulness about the future. Simple acts of kindness can never be taken for granted, cause one is never sure which will take root and grow. CTT Team 9 heard several testimonies of those acts of kindness beginning during CTT Team 1 that have taken root over the years and are now blossoming or even flourishing. So they really made every moment at SMK count for something. It was incredible to witness Jackie, Lynne, Rebecca, and Scott freely give their utmost here. They loved completely, and the beauty is that love was given back ten-fold by the children at SMK.

It was a special time for all, a visit that will not be forgotten!

CTT Team 9: Christmas at SMK

Posted on January 5, 2016 at 6:30 AM

Unlike other holidays throughout the year, Christmas Day really strikes an emotional chord here at St. Mary Kevin Children’s Home. Children, who remember a time when their biological family was intact, are often flooded with those happier memories. Those children who are without make up memories that could/should have been in their mind for additional comfort. While having the Change The Truth team visiting during the Christmas holiday can’t completely erase the internal pangs and tears of the day, the fun and merriment they bring to the environment of SMK does help to alleviate them for at least a portion.

CTT Team 9!!

Posted on December 16, 2015 at 7:55 AM

The Change The Truth Team 9 is arriving here at SMK.  It is always the grand finale of the year for this visit!  When children come back from school at end of November, it becomes a countdown to seeing special friends from CTT both returning and new.  The days will be full of activities, fieldtrips, and lots of love.

The first visitor to arrive is Rebecca from New York City.  She could be a native Ugandan for as comfortable as she has been at SMK.  It took only seconds for the children, especially the teenage girls, to make her acquaintance.  She has been busy ever since...

NEW Toilets at SMK!!

Within the past couple years, SMK has become a partnered project site for People For Change. Several visitors from Amsterdam have visited SMK to assess their ability to impact change to benefit the children. The very first visitor was Jeroen. During his time at SMK, he was moved by the children’s hygiene conditions. The existing toilets were getting older and difficult to maintain properly. Upon his return home, Jeroen was inspired to fundraise for new toilets and shower buildings. There are a total of 12 toilet stalls with porcelain basins and 8 shower stalls for the children and staff staying within SMK. Construction on this project has been happening for upwards to 6 months. And now, they are finally completed!

Thanks to Jeroen and his friends for their support on this project.

SMK Garden is Growing!

The rainy season has been persistent in Uganda for over a month now. One of the benefits of the plentiful rain is seen in the rapid growth of SMK’s Gardens. A few years ago, a generous CTT donor assisted with the construction of ‘Tom and Randy’s Garden’, which is enclosed on a larger plot of SMK’s land. The goal is to provide nutritious vegetables added to the bean mixture for additional vitamins. Children assist with the ground preparations, planting, weeding, maintaining, and harvesting. This gardening activity acts as a valuable life skill with rewards at the end of their labor. It truly is a community project enjoyed by all!

Cool Shoes at SMK

Posted on November 28, 2015 at 7:40 AM

This past holiday, Gloria brought over some really clever and innovative shoes for the younger Primary aged students. The concept of The Shoe That Grows are comfortable shoes that grow with the child up to 5 shoe sizes (or approximately 5 years) with high quality leather, rubber, and metal clasps. Visit their website at http://theshoethatgrows.org  or more information.

Gloria brought over 75 pairs of sandals fitting for student Primary 1-Primary 4. For easier transport and sorting, each pair of sandals was transported in individual plastic baggies. One afternoon we spent time showing these students how to adjust their sandals and doing a personal fitting for each child. There was some tugging and pulling to get just the right fit. But students were patient with lots of smiles, shouts of joy, and comparisons with friends (even though they are exactly the same).

But then something unexpected happened. As a child receiving new shoes, I can recall begging my Mom to allow me to wear those shoes out of the store after paying for them. I could not wait to break in the new pair with an extra pep in my step. But for these children, shoes are always used/second-hand. The simple fact that these were NEW shoes given to them, never worn by another person, was an incredibly precious gift. So each child (even single one without prompting from any adult) took great care in packing those new sandals back into their plastic baggies. They would be stored in their cases for special occasions, like church, outings for performance, or holiday activities.

As the new holiday has approached, I find myself looking at the feet of students waiting for the new sandals to emerge from their cases. Will post some photos when that day comes…

Thank you for Change The Truth and The Shoe That Grows for this gift!
